A scorpion wanted to cross a rushing river but could not swim.

He saw a frog nearby and asked if the frog would carry him across on his back.

The frog hesitated, terrified.

He asked, "Why should I do that?

If I let you on my back, you will sting me, and I will die!"

The scorpion quickly reasoned with him:

"If I sting you and you die, we will both sink to the bottom and drown. I don't want to die either."

The logic made sense to the frog.

He agreed, let the scorpion climb onto his back, and set out into the water.

Halfway across the river, the scorpion raised his stinger and plunged it into the frog's back.

The paralyzed frog felt the poison spreading and realized he was dying.

As they both began to sink, the frog gasped out in disbelief:

"Why? Now we will both die!"

The scorpion looked at the dying frog and replied:

"I couldn't help it. It's in my nature."
